Frequently asked questions

Why should I start practising kendo?

Kendo is a fun and engaging martial art, where you will not only explore the principles and philosophy of a Japanese Budo (martial way), but also the competitive sporting aspect of full contact sparring. You will join thousands of fellow Kendoka in the UK and millions around the world in the Kendo community, where you can travel almost anywhere in the world and always find a friendly face and a welcoming Kendo club.

Whatever your level, Kendo practice will always encourage you to give everything, helping to develop your strength in your whole body and delivering a full cardiovascular workout.

While Kendo practice is designed to challenge and test you, and is a full contact sport, your safety whilst practising Kendo is very important to us at Mumeishi Kendo Club. You will only put on armour and experience full contact sparring when you are ready to do so, and Mumeishi Kendo Club has a disciplined and supportive atmosphere to ensure that you can practice safely.

Who can practice kendo?

Kendo can be practiced by all ages, sizes and genders.

At Mumeishi we have a wide age range from 6 to 70+ years as well as a mix of men and women Kendoka. Throughout the year Mumeishi kendo club runs a number of six week adult beginners course. For both children and adults this allows you to sample and start Kendo with no previous experience of martial arts.

What happens after I finish the beginners course?

After the beginners course is complete, you will be invited to join as a full member of Mumeishi Kendo Club. Our current fees are £30 a month for Adults, and £20 a month for Juniors. For adults you will gain the opportunity, if you want, to start attending more sessions other than just our Tuesday session.

We will also ask you to purchase some appropriate kendo clothing, a Kendogi and a Hakama. You can purchase this clothing quite cheaply at any of the following UK based Kendo stores:

Kendostar International

Eurokendo

Nine Circles

When do I get into armour?

We don’t have a set amount of time before getting people into armour, we assess on a case by case basis. The most important thing is that you will be able to practice safely while wearing armour, and that other people will be able to practice safely with you. Generally speaking, if you attend regularly, you will be putting on armour a few weeks after you have finished the beginners course.

Do I have to buy the armour before I can start wearing it?

No, we have many club sets that we will lend you so you can use them during practice. Eventually, if you enjoy wearing armour and continue to practice, we recommending purchasing your own set, using one of the providers listed above.
